Getting the Correct Shoe Size

In order to correctly measure your shoe size, all you need is a piece of paper larger than your foot, a pencil, tape and a ruler or measuring tape.

First of all, tape the paper to the floor, then sit so that your foot is firmly planted on the floor with your leg bent a little bit forward. Your shin should be just in front of your ankle. Wear only the socks similar to those that you will be wearing with the shoes, then trace the outline of your foot while you hold the pencil upright perpendicular to the paper. Do not hold the pencil at an angle. The pencil should also be firmly against your foot when you draw around it. It would be best if someone else could trace your foot, but if no one is available, you may do it yourself.

In order to determine the length of your foot, draw straight lines that touch the outer points at the top, bottom and sides of the foot outline. Then hold the measuring tape (or ruler) completely straight and measure the length from the bottom line to the top line. Use the closest 1/16 inch, and do not round off to anything more than 1/16 of an inch. Write down the number.

To determine the width of your foot, measure from the line on one side to the other side of your foot tracing. Once again, use the closest 1/16 mark. Write down the number.

Then repeat these steps for your other foot. Write down the number. Since one of your feet is slightly larger than the other, you will need to use the larger of the two.

Subtract 2/10 of an inch from the numbers you have written down; this will be your actual foot measurement. (The reason for subtracting 2/10 of an inch is that you need to accommodate for the slim space between your foot and the line made by the pencil.)

You may convert the numbers to the actual shoe size and width by using the conversion tables listed below.
