Polishing Your
Smooth Leather Shoes
Shoe polishes
contain chemicals that are toxic and could be
very dangerous if not used correctly.
Of course, these products have been used and
stored in households for years and with very few
accidents, you still need to heed the warnings.
The toxic chemicals contained in shoe polishes
can be absorbed through the skin and/or inhaled.
Therefore, it is extremely important that you
wear gloves when polishing your shoes. Also, do
not drink alcohol when you are polishing shoes
because it can exacerbate the effect of certain
chemicals contained in the shoe polish. Of
course, as with any products containing toxic
chemicals, keep them out of the reach of
children and pets. Since the chemicals can be
toxic if inhaled, it is important to use the
polish in a well-ventilated area. Use the entire
product before throwing it away; otherwise, you
will need to dispose of it at a hazardous waste
facility. Any rags used to polish the shoes
should be discarded immediately. Safely assume
that any of the shoe polishing products contain
hazardous chemicals, even if the ingredients are
not listed, including those products that claim
to be non-toxic.
If at all possible, it is best to avoid using
shoe polish, however, if this is not practical
for you, make sure you follow the instructions
on the product and use all necessary
precautions.
Traditional leather shoe polish that is
available in liquid, cream or paste may also be
used. The liquid shoe polish is not available in
a wide selection of colors, but it is easy to
use and dries very quickly.
Properly Cleaning and Take Care of your Smooth
Leather Shoes 4
The longest lasting type of polish is the shoe
polish cream, which is available in a wider
assortment of colors.
Color selections of shoe polish are more widely
available in a shoe repair store than in other
stores where shoe polish is sold. You may also
try online to find the type of shoe polish in
that certain color you need. You should test the
particular color of polish in an inconspicuous
area first.
Apply the polish to your shoe, then rub it with
a soft cloth and let it dry thoroughly. Once it
is dry, you may shine your shoes. Buff them with
a soft cloth or a shoe brush specifically
designed for shining shoes.
There are some alternatives you can utilize,
instead of polishing your shoes.
For more natural methods, clean your smooth
leather shoes, (not suede or nubuck) with the
inside of a banana peel. However, first test
this method on a small inconspicuous spot on the
shoe. Then the shoe may be buffed and shined
with a soft cloth. You may also try olive oil or
walnut oil in the same manner. But, once again,
try it on an inconspicuous spot before applying
the oil to the entire shoe.
Or, if you prefer, You can take your shoes to a
shoe repair shop to have them cleaned and
polished, for a reasonable fee.
